Sydney, Australia

Travel with Gray Line Sydney on a tour of Sydney City’s highlights.

First stop is The Rocks which holds a unique place in Sydney’s colonial history with the arrival of a fleet of 11 British ships moored in Sydney Cove carrying the first shipment of British convicts to begin the European settlement of a new nation called Australia.

On this rocky peninsula, convicts replaced the traditional way of life of the Indigenous inhabitants, the Cadigal people. With Sydney developing into a port city, The Rocks took on all the characteristics of a dockside area, welcoming the sailors of the world to the haunts of entertainment and friendly company. especially around the pubs of the Rocks such as the Hero of Waterloo where there is an enduring legend that a secret tunnel running from the cellar of the hotel to the harbour was used for rum smuggling and the involuntary recruitment of sailors known as “press ganging or shanghai-ing”.
